Teaching & service

These are exciting, head-spinning times to teach and learn computational linguistics, the field behind modern-day AI.

Computational linguistics is undergoing huge disruptions. Like pretty much everyone else, I am trying to navigate the changes that AI is causing in the classroom. Courses that were taught the same way for decades now need major revamps, or are becoming a thing of the past. I am, just like many students, on a journey of scrambling and trying.

Flagship courses

I also teach programming for language data and related courses.

Working with students

I enjoy working with students. I regularly supervise and mentor undergraduate research (UROP) and graduate research assistants, and I serve on doctoral committees. Students in my group have co-authored peer-reviewed papers on AI and language. If you are a current or prospective FSU student, passionate about language and interested in language technology and programming (at any level), do reach out and tell me what you are curious about.

Service

Service to the field matters to me. I review regularly for the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL Rolling Review and the main conferences) and have served on review panels for the National Science Foundation. I am proud to have received an ACL Reviewer Excellence distinction for my reviewing.
